Hi all! Thanks so much for your patience. It’s been busy over here at Branch headquarters. We’ve been graduating (congrats, Rob!), exam-ing, thesis-ing, etc. so production on our latest issue has been set back. But we are excited to show you what we’ve got and will launch in May. When we do, spring will also be here, full-fledged, and will have quit this teasing song and dance. (That is, unless you’re on the west side of the country. Then it’s totally spring. The cherry blossoms are out and we here in the east are totally jealous.)

See you soon in May!

SLS Unified Literary Contest Deadline Extended: March 9, 2013

Summer Literary Seminars is very excited to announce their 2013 unified (Lithuania and Kenya) literary contest! It will be held this year in affiliation with Fence Magazine and The Walrus. Joining them will be the dynamic online magazines Joyland, Branch, and DIAGRAM;

Judging the contest are award-winning writers Mary Gaitskill (fiction), Eileen Myles (poetry), and Ander Monson (non fiction).

Presenting: Maisonneuve’s second annual Genre Fiction contest!

Maisonneuve runs a literary contest every year, with the contest’s genre changing from year to year.

This year’s theme: fables and parables!

Send them your finest original interpretations of these ancient storytelling traditions! Moral lessons, animals, mythical creatures—you know the deal. You could be the next Aesop!

Last night I fell asleep at 1 to text messages from Rob telling me that he went live with our next issue, then I dreamed that I contacted our contributors to tell them the good news, then woke up at 8 and did exactly just that. All to say, it feels like I didn’t sleep a wink. But hey - good news, our What’s Your Story? issue is up! I’m excited by all the new voices, but also stoked to have David Bergen in there. He, as some of you may know, was my creative writing teacher when I was at University of Winnipeg and we’ve stayed in touch since then. It’s with great pleasure that I bring you Branch’s ninth instalment. Enjoy!

This is the how the light looks in the evenings now. Rob and I have been busy with the next issue of Branch. We sneak in our hours late at night to edit, lay out, compile, revise, tweak and revise again. There’s a three-hour difference between us so by the time I finish my part, he’s starting his. Collectively, we work through the night while everyone else is asleep.

Issue 6 feature artist, Marina Bychkova, goes to New York with her beautiful Enchanted Dolls for a shoot for Vogue Japan. Check out the teaser by filmmaker Benjamin Taft, who is working on a documentary about Enchanted Dolls. Fantastic! We can’t wait!

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival launches today, and we’re delighted to tell you that Branch contributor Melissa Mercier has been selected to be part of it. Check it out if you’re in Toronto in May.

Melissa’s series, Irrational Fear Of Confined Spaces, will be exhibited at Toronto’s 16th Contact Photography Festival, the largest photography event in the world. The images will be on display at the Gladstone hotel from May 2nd until May 27th.

-Opening reception: Thursday May 3rd, 7pm to 10pm

About Melissa Mercier
“Irrational Fear of Confined Spaces” is a study of claustrophobia through the lens of Vancouver based photographer Melissa Mercier.

When you look at this series of work you see a direct reflection of the artist herself. Mercier has not been clinically diagnosed with the condition, but feeling trapped is possibly the worst thing she can imagine. The airy nature of this body of work is her remedy to the feeling of being cornered. “I’m so attracted to spaciousness, that I actually chose the space itself to be the subject of these photographs.” says Melissa. The images in this series we’re taken on the shoreline at Banff National Park’s Lake Louise at daybreak after sleeping in a car to ensure a solitary experience. At first glance some of the works appear to be taken underwater but they are all from above, allowing the submerged and protruding elements of the natural setting play with the lake’s surface as if to breathe or suffocate whether above or below.
